A PROBLEM?
If you’ve had hard rigid orthotics prescribed for you… well, you probably hate wearing them. Here is What’s going on with the madness. Traditionally trained Podiatrists are thinking “imobilization” when they “cast” you for Orthotics. The problem is twofold. First, The foot is made up of many moveable joints. They move to allow the foot to act as a shock absorber every time you stand up. You can understand how important that is if you decide to do jump rope for example. All of the your body weight is supported by your “flexible” arches, made up of a combination of joints and connective tissue (called fascia). The other problem is this:

For one, the classic rigid orthotics most podiatrists use (that haven’t appreciably changed in the past 30 years) treat the foot as “just a foot”, not as part of a complex biomechanical system.
Most traditional orthotics are cast while the patient is lying down, without the foot providing support for the pelvis and spine above it. It’s impossible to accurately determine the degree of pronation and arch collapse with this method. Studies have shown that the end result is substantially less support for the foot.

Taking measurements in a dynamic weight-bearing position, like we do at Sirota Chiropractic, has been scientifically proven to be far, far more reliable, and clinically useful.
Even if it were a valid method of taking measurements, research published by Physical Therapy Journal demonstrated that even among experienced podiatrists, orthotic casting is so unreliable from one practitioner to the next that it’s essentially useless.
